Red Dead Redemption 2 Becomes the Fourth Best-Selling Video Game in History
During the same financial report where Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, announced the delay of Grand Theft Auto VI until November 19, 2026, and revealed that Grand Theft Auto V has sold more copies than the population of Brazil, the company also updated the sales numbers for Red Dead Redemption 2. The game has now become the fourth best-selling video game in history.
Record-Breaking Global Sales
As of September 30, 2025, Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold 79 million units worldwide, including versions for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. This means it has surpassed the total sales of Mario Kart 8, which sold a combined 78.02 million units across the Wii U (8.46 million) and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch (69.56 million).
The only game standing between Rockstar’s western epic and the podium is Wii Sports, bundled with most Wii consoles (except in Japan), which reached 82.9 million units sold. The second best-selling game of all time is another Rockstar title, Grand Theft Auto V, with 220 million copies sold across three console generations. The top spot remains held by Minecraft with an astounding 350 million copies sold.
Most Profitable Game in the U.S. Over the Past Seven Years
Take-Two Interactive also shared more sales data about the Red Dead Redemption franchise. In the United States, measured by revenue rather than units sold, Red Dead Redemption 2 has been the best-selling video game over the last seven years, according to Circana data collected between April 2018 and April 2025.
In total, the Red Dead Redemption series has sold 106 million units, which includes the original Red Dead Redemption (released in 2010 for PS3 and Xbox 360, re-released in 2023 for Switch and PS4, and on PC last year) and the standalone version of Red Dead Online.
In other news, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that AI cannot create a game like Grand Theft Auto VI because it lacks the genuine creativity and genius of human artists.
