Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV could represent one of the best looking games ever released for PC. It may, in addition, prove to be one of the most system demanding at high-level since the infamous Crysis.

A report has, however, found that no graphics card appears capable of running Final Fantasy XV in 4k at 60fps.

Graphics card performance in FFXV

When the benchmarking tool released, we all knew roughly where we stood with our systems and Final Fantasy XV. Personally, I was looking at the 1440p experience on high-graphics and fortunately, things seemed reasonably rosy.

In a report via PCGamesN, however, with the demo released yesterday, it appears that no graphics card might be powerful enough to run the game in 4k resolution at 60fps.

A game with graphics that are too good

In the testing, they round that while attempting to run the game in 4k, results were well below 60fps. The closest they were able to get was 57fps running on a Nvidia 1080ti. This, was with the Nvidia technology GameWorks disabled! Now, unless you have the best part of £1000 in your pocket, or already own one of these, sadly you might need to forget 4k gaming.

Even cards such as the Nvidia 1060 or AMD 580 in 1080p were only getting around the 40-60 mark. This though, with GameWorks activated.

Not great news so far

While I expect that everyone with a half-decent PC will find their level in Final Fantasy XV, this has confirmed what many of us already suspected. Final Fantasy XV might look fantastic, but it might need an absolute beast of a system to manage it.

Those usually accustomed to 4k gaming might have to take the step down to 1440p and similarly for those at 1440p going to 1080p.

This doesn’t appear to be anything to do with optimization issues for PCs. The game might simply be too good for the current market.

This just means FF15 is this year’s Crysis from 2008 or whenever.

I think it’s good for there to be a game or program out there that is common enough that people are familiar with it be so well done that current hardware struggles to run it at its best. This drives innovation. Now there’s a challenge for even the top-end graphics systems: 4k60f max quality gaming with FF15.

Until this post, I was seriously worried that graphics cards were getting too good at performing. I mean, it’s said that even the midrange 1060 is great for almost all gaming at 1080p at even the highest settings, and 1440p at high settings. To me it makes sense that only the top-end system can just barely max the top-end game.
