Report Suggests PS6 Delay to 2029 and Potential Switch 2 Price Increase
According to sources cited by Bloomberg, Sony may delay the launch of the PS6 to 2028 or even 2029. At the same time, Nintendo could be forced to increase the price of the Switch 2.
In both cases, these would be major decisions caused by strong pressure on the hardware market. In recent months, RAM prices have risen sharply due to high demand linked to the construction of data centers. This has reduced the availability of components and pushed costs higher. Analysts believe this situation could continue for a long time, creating problems for many hardware manufacturers.
Rising RAM Prices Could Impact the Entire Console Market
Bloomberg’s sources suggest that Sony may have to move the PS6 launch from its expected 2027 window to as late as 2029. The goal would be to wait for the market to stabilize and avoid releasing a console that could end up being too expensive for consumers. The PS6 is already expected to cost more than previous PlayStation systems.
The rising cost of memory components is affecting the entire tech industry, and gaming consoles are no exception. With production costs increasing, companies must decide whether to delay their products or pass those costs on to customers.
Switch 2 Price Increase May Become Inevitable
Nintendo could also face difficult choices. According to Bloomberg’s sources, the company may have to raise the price of the Switch 2 worldwide in the coming months. This view is supported by a recent analysis from Niko Partners, which notes that Nintendo has already dealt with higher production costs due to tariffs last year.
Now, the ongoing RAM shortage may make the situation worse. The pressure on component prices could force Nintendo to adjust the price of the Switch 2 even during its first year on the market.
For now, neither Sony nor Nintendo has officially commented on Bloomberg’s report. This is not surprising, as these are sensitive business plans that companies usually prefer not to discuss publicly in order to avoid worrying consumers and investors.
In related news, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has also warned that surging RAM prices, driven by high demand from AI data centers, will significantly impact high-end PC gaming and next-gen consoles for several years.
