Reviewer Under Attack for Giving Zelda: BotW a 7/10 Score

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been out a little over a week now and it has received wildly positive reviews. For a short while, it even shared the rank of best-reviewed games of all time with a score of 98 (out of 100). That changed when reviewer Jim Sterling published his review and gave the game a 7 out of 10, pushing the overall rating down to 97.

An overall score of 97 is still extremely good and it makes one wonder about the harsh feedback that Jim Sterling is receiving for his review. His site is under DDoS attacks from angry fans and his social media sites are filled with angry rants too.

Some of the comments that sparked the biggest critic from readers are as follows:

“At its absolute best, Breath of the Wild offers some of the most absorbing experiences a Zelda game ever has.”

“Unfortunately, it makes you work harder for it than you should, buried as it is under a pile of small but constant irritations that collaborate to form a thick crust of frustration around a delectable center.”

“Breath of the Wild is a delightful adventure, one that tries its utmost to be as big a pain in the arse as possible.”

Normally, I would show some comments from users, but for the biggest part, they are too nasty to re-publish. If you still want to read them, just visit Jim’s Twitter profile and read some of the replies and comments. While most people jump straight to insults, others blame Jim “and his close friend Slant magazine” for a conspiracy to drag down Metacritic scores by one point due to his alleged revenge against Nintendo for copyright claims on his videos.

A score of 7 out of 10 is rated as ‘Good’, and that’s a fair assessment in my opinion. The game isn’t perfect and it shouldn’t receive a perfect score either. It’s also worth noting that he didn’t receive his copy of the game from Nintendo, but purchased it himself. That might free him up to say and mention things sponsored reviewers weren’t allowed to say. But that’s pure speculation.

Have you played the new Zelda game yet? And if so, what’s your take on it? Is it worthy of a 9/10 score like the ‘large outlets’ say, or is a 7/10 as Jim gave it spot on? Let us know in the comments.
