It was confirmed last month that Sony had, exceptionally quietly, revised the design of their PS5 console. While it did take a while before the changes were entirely understood, one of the biggest notable factors was that the new system weighed around 300 grams less than the original. Why was this? Well, it was shortly after discovered that the new (and presumable standard now) PS5 had a significantly smaller heatsink.
So, with this in mind, smaller radiator higher temperatures, right? Well, following a report via TechSpot, various test results have now been pooled and, on the whole, while that does seem to be the case, arguably one of the console’s most important components has, somehow, actually gotten cooler!
PS5 – Original VS Revised
Breaking the results down into their most basic form, and taking all confirmed testing to date and putting that into an average, it would appear that the newly revised PS5 runs hotter, by around 1C-5C when compared to the original system in the following areas/components:
- General internal
- Memory
- Storage
- Air exhaust (the temperature of the air coming out of the PS5)
- VRM (Albeit, this figure is closer to 5C-10C higher)
So, on the whole, and in something that comes as no surprise, it would appear that the ‘new’ PS5 generally runs hotter than the original. What is surprising, however, is that all the tests seemingly agree that despite everything else being hotter, the CPU, arguably the most important component is significantly lower!
CPU = Cool – Everything Else = Hot!
Although the scores did vary across the various testing methodologies used, most results agreed that despite the notably smaller heatsink, the processor temperatures for the newly revised PS5 are definitely lower than seen on the original model. And we’re not talking about a couple of degrees here either. Most of the results provided show that the revised model is as much as 7-10C cooler.
This does, however, create an interesting solution. Is it better to have a cooler CPU at the expense of literally everything else?… I honestly don’t know, but what do you think? – Let us know in the comments!
