Riot Games Cancels Minecraft-Inspired Game in Development and Lays Off Developers
In difficult times like these, it is not uncommon to hear about canceled projects. Even Riot Games has decided to pull the plug on one of the games in development at one of its teams.
Hypixel Studios and the End of Hytale
We are not talking about the main teams behind League of Legends and Valorant, but rather Hypixel Studios, a small studio that became part of Riot Games a few years ago. This studio was working on Hytale, a title heavily inspired by Minecraft (it’s worth noting that the developers had previously worked on a multiplayer server for the Mojang title).
Hytale was essentially a Minecraft with a strong role-playing component, mini-games to tackle, and dungeons to complete. The game worlds were all procedurally generated, and it also supported multiplayer, allowing players to create their own servers and generate new assets.
According to statements from Noxy, the CEO of the development team acquired by Riot Games in 2020, the project was canceled due to the increasing scope of the project and the rising costs. As a result, 150 employees were laid off. At this time, it remains unclear what will happen to the game, though there is a possibility that it may return in the future in a different form.
