Rise of the Tomb Raider is a visual masterpiece and looks absolutely stunning on a 4K Television, especially with HDR enabled. Of course, the PS4 Pro console provides a significant boost in graphical fidelity compared to the base unit and designed with 4K gaming in mind. Sadly, the experience has been far from ideal due to horrible input lag which was finally fixed in version 1.05. Despite this, it appears the input lag has returned, albeit it in a less egregious manner using the latest patch, version 1.06. This particular patch addresses frame rate instability and should make the gameplay appear smoother. Unfortunately, the improvements have been marred by the input lag returning which needs to be fixed rather sharply.
Don’t get me wrong, the input lag isn’t awful and many people should adjust to it, but it’s not a great situation for an action title. The PS4 Pro isn’t really offering many reasons for existing owners of the PS4 to upgrade unless you own a pretty expensive Television with HDR capabilities. Hopefully, the input lag is sorted in update 1.07 and PlayStation 4 users can finally enjoy the game as intended. If you’re really bothered by the input lag, I’d recommend sticking with version 1.05 for the time being, despite it resulting in more inconsistent performance.
Do own a 4K Television or plan on upgrading to one soon?
