Roccat Khan AIMO Gaming Headset Review

Final Thoughts

Price

The Roccat Khan Aimo 7.1 Hi-Res Gaming Headset is available now at most major retailers with an MSRP of £120. However, Amazon has them at £105 for now. That’s not exactly loose change, I know, but it’s a bloody bargain for the quality and performance on offer. The Astro A40 is comparable, but expect to pay £120 just for the headset, and another £80 if you want the MixAmp. The ASUS Centurion, similar again but it’s £200, and it’s very bulky in comparison. The HyperX Cloud 2 is the closest match, but the Khan has it all built-in for less money, so you do the math.

Overview

Gaming, movies, music, Skype, it doesn’t matter what you throw at them. If you like to just grab a drink, put your feet up, shut your eyes and listen, the Khan is perfect for the job. Then again, if you like to lock your eyes on your screen and battle it out in Overwatch while screaming at your mates, they’re ideal for that too, the choice is yours.

Build Quality

Without a doubt, the Khan Aimo is top of its class, or at least competitive with any other premium headset on the market. The choice of materials is superb, and they’ve mixed quality plastic surfaces and metal very well. It’s strong in all the right places while remaining lightweight and stylish. If anything, it’s very understated visually, which some may see as a con, but not me. Even the lighting effects are understated and stylish and can be turned off too, which is nice.

Performance

Faultless, it really is one of the best I’ve ever tested. I’ve reviewed many more expensive headsets that blew me away, but the Khan keeps up with any of them on their best day. Doing so with such impressive ergonomics is what’s most impressive. The passive noise cancellation rivals much bigger ear cups, the bass rivals much bigger drivers, and the clarity and surrounds rivals our studio headphones.

The Perfect Headset?

Almost, and I mean it’s super freaking close. If I have one gripe it is the USB cable. I love using 3.5mm jacks, it’s a simple thing that means I can use the headset on my phone, my consoles,  my own amp/DAC combo, etc. It’s not a deal breaker though, as if you’re just after a PC headset, then you’re set. However, I hope to see Roccat offer a similar solution with 3.5mm jack. I understand that the DAC and amp are built into this headset though, so maybe it would lose far more than you could gain from the change in connectivity.

Should I Buy One

If you’re looking for a headset that delivers staggeringly beautiful audio performance, a fantastic microphone, and one of the most comfortable fits on the market, look no further. There are other headsets that are as good, but you can expect to easily pay more for them. The Khan is already one of my all-time favourites, and I think it’s fair to say I’ve used up all the superlatives required.
