Roccat Kone AIMO Optical Gaming Mouse Review

A Closer Look and Performance

The latest Kone AIMO comes hard-wired with a very nice quality black braided cable. The cable is slim and light too, so it’s unlikely to drag while you’re gaming.

It’s easy to see that this is a Roccat mouse. It borrows many design elements from their existing range. However, it seems to have a bolder and more aggressive stance, and I certainly approve of that. Comfort isn’t compromised though, as the surfaces are smooth and curved where you want them to be, providing great ergonomics.

Added Control

While the mouse does feature two large navigation button on the side, it also features a third button at the bottom. This thumb key is fantastic for additional macros and shortcuts; perfect for setting a melee attack in FPS games too. I have mine set as the Enter key, handy for progressing steps in my Photoshop macros.

The T1 and T2 buttons have a large surface that’s comfortable for the thumb to rest on. However, their shape makes them easy to control by nudging your thumb up and hitting the bottom of them too; less movement = faster response times and winning.

Armoured Design

The mouse body is built up from multiple panels, at least it looks like it is. This gives it an armoured body look, and the mixture of matte grey over black looks pretty cool overall. The mouse features a right-handed design, perhaps Roccat will do a lefty, but no news on that yet.

The stance on this mouse is nice to look at, but also practical. It slopes off to the right a little, so your wrist doesn’t twist all the way flat with your desk, making it easier on your hand.

Rubber Grip Wheel

The large scroll wheel glides with ease, but also has a tactile click when turned, making it accurate while scrolling.

Finally, one the base, you’ll find five large slipmats, which keep it feeling fast and nimble on both hard and soft cloth gaming surfaces. But enough about the design and ergonomics for a minute, how does it perform?

Well for starters, it looks nice and at home with the Roccat Horde AIMO keyboard, but we’ll revisit that one another day!

AIMO

Featuring AIMO lighting, the mouse can match up the lighting on your Roccat peripherals with what’s on your screen, in-game effects, or the usual custom colours and effects of your choosing. It’s pretty bright and vivid too, with awesome colours and huge amounts of customisation.

The new Owl Eye sensor is no stranger to us, we’ve had experience of every Roccat mouse on the market, and all have welcomed their push for improved optics. With up to 12000 DPI, it’s unlikely you’ll max that speed, but it’s a nice tool to have for fast navigation on high-resolution displays and large maps. That being said, you can drop down to something like 50 DPI, and get accuracy worthy of brain surgeons steady hands. There are DPI toggle buttons on the mouse, so you’re never far from your profile of choice for any game.

With profiles in mind, the mouse offers full button customisation. This goes from reordering them, to full macro customisation, shortcuts and launches. There’s not a huge amount of buttons, but using their shift function, you can expand on that.

FPS, Mobo, Something Else?

Overall, the gaming performance is as good as one would expect from one of Roccat’s best. For FPS gamers to MOBA gamers, it’s got just enough for everyone. The sensor is flawless, the buttons are fast and nimble, and the ergonomics feel tight for any grip type. Sure, the MMO market may want to stick with their TYON and its larger button count, but other than that, huge thumbs up.
