RTX 5090 Shows Up to 12% Performance Boost on Ubuntu 26.04
Recent tests from the website Phoronix show that the new Ubuntu 26.04 release brings noticeable performance improvements for users with the GeForce RTX 5090. In some cases, performance gains can reach up to 12%, which was not expected before the update.
These improvements are not random. They come from better integration between the operating system and the desktop environment.
Ubuntu 26.04 and GNOME 50 Bring GPU Optimizations
One of the key changes in Ubuntu 26.04 is the inclusion of GNOME 50. This version introduces improvements in Mutter, the window manager used by GNOME. These optimizations are designed to work better with modern GPU architectures, including NVIDIA’s RTX 50 series.
Ubuntu 26.04 also includes Mesa 26, the latest version of the open-source graphics stack. This update brings bug fixes and improvements, especially for Vulkan ray tracing support.
Together, these updates allow the Blackwell architecture used in the RTX 5090 to perform more efficiently on Linux.
Tests comparing Ubuntu 26.04 with the older Ubuntu 25.10 show clear performance improvements in several cases.
For example:
- Counter-Strike 2 showed an improvement of around 8% when using the RTX 5090.
- Xonotic reached performance gains of up to 10% in some scenarios.
- Synthetic benchmarks, including GravityMark and 3DMark WildLife Extreme, showed improvements between 5% and 6%.
Interestingly, these gains appear to benefit the RTX 5090 more than other cards in the same generation. The RTX 5080 showed smaller improvements or similar performance compared to previous results.
For gamers who own an RTX 5090, upgrading to Ubuntu 26.04 may now be more than a matter of preference. With an average performance gain of about 4.4% and peaks up to 12%, Linux continues to grow as a gaming platform worth considering.
