Barely a week after an overclocker managed to push an AMD Ryzen 7 1800X up to a record-breaking 5.3GHz, someone has smashed the feat, overclocking the same processor to a whopping 5.8GHz. Lauded German overclocker Der8auer achieved the feat by removing the integrated heat spreader (IHS) from the top of the chip, a process known as delidding – a process Der8auer warned people against in a video a few days ago – and cooling the exposed chip with liquid nitrogen (i.e. direct die cooling).
For reference, the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X is an eight-core, sixteen-thread CPU that clocks in at 3.6GHz base and 4.0GHz boost, though AMD’s Extended Frequency Range (XFR) will allow you to another 100MHz out of the chip. The processor also boasts 16MB of L3 cache and 4MB of L2 cache, with a 95W TDP.
Der8auer’s overclocking results – achieved using a voltage of 1.97v on an Asus Crosshair VI Hero motherboard with 16GB od 2,400MHz DDR4 RAM – published his results on HWBot:
The results show that Der8aur managed to push the 1800X to a massive 5,802.93MHz (5.8GHz) – which is 61% greater than the CPU’s stock clock – with a 44.5 multiplier and a 130.4MHz bus speed, using all eight cores and all sixteen threads.
