Ryzen 7 9800X3D Fails on ASUS X870 Motherboard Under Light Load

AMD

Once again, there are problems being reported with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. According to a recent report shared by Reddit user seklay, another CPU suddenly stopped working, even though the system was running at less than 10% load.

Unusual Failure Under Low Workload

What makes this case particularly unusual is the context of the failure. Unlike other reports where damage occurred under heavy load or high temperatures, the user had left the PC running overnight with only light background applications active. The next morning, the system was frozen.

After restarting the computer, it failed to complete the POST process. The motherboard displayed an orange DRAM LED, a common sign of CPU-related issues.

The system was built with an ASUS TUF Gaming X870-Plus motherboard. Although AMD EXPO and PBO profiles were enabled, no manual overclocking had been performed. After testing with a different processor, it was confirmed that the motherboard was still working properly, while the Ryzen 7 9800X3D had completely failed.

Interestingly, there were no visible burn marks or physical damage on the AM5 socket.

This incident adds to other reported failures within the Ryzen 9000X3D series. However, overall RMA (return) statistics remain within normal limits.

Experts still stress the importance of keeping the BIOS updated to the latest version, such as AGESA 1.3.0.0a, since motherboard manufacturers continue to release updates aimed at improving stability for these high-performance chips.

For now, this case serves as a reminder that even next-generation hardware can face unexpected issues, even under light workloads.
