Samsung 9100 PRO 2TB PCIe 5 M.2 SSD Review

Obviously, being a Gen5, the Samsung 9100 Pro is incredibly fast. While it’s rated for up to 14700 read and 13400 MB/s write, we didn’t quite get to that number, but we did get pretty darn close. Of course, those top numbers can happen, but your CPU, motherboard, and RAM configuration can have an impact, as can the operating system, and the test being performed at that time.

IOPS look fantastic too, with well over 250K read and write on the RND4K.

But one of the most impressive aspects is how fast the drive’s controller allows it to get up to full speed. From 256K blocks, the write speed is consistently at the upper end, while the read speed is from 1MB blocks upwards, but still close to that from just 256KB blocks.

It scores very strongly in Anvil too, with one of the highest overall scores we’ve seen to date, largely thanks to the exceptionally low response times and high IOPS.

When moving a large number of small files, the drive responded exceptionally well, with basic file management happening effectively instantly.

In this test, we copied 6 files with a total file size of 50GB, and again, it managed to complete this in just 20 seconds, which is fantastic news for those moving around large assets of installations.

We continue to see high speeds in AS SSD, and while this is below what we saw in CrystalDiskMark, that’s true of all drives in this benchmark; but the overall score being around 15K is proof this is an extremely potent drive.

Here we see massive IOPS too, with the 4K-64 test hitting just shy of 1M read, and 1.6M write.

For copying ISO’s, general programs and games, you’ll see extremely short transfer times, and of course, this will translate to snappy loading times too.

When dealing with compressible data, the drive performed great, with a tiny tip at 15% compressible data, but really given the rest of the graph is largely holding above 10,000MB/s, we can assume that was just the CPU playing catch up with the extremely fast drive.

For capturing high-resolution, high-refresh-rate video, this drive excels. You could comfortably record, stream or edit multiple high-resolution assets in real time with no bottlenecking issues.

Gaming loading times certainly won’t be an issue either, and while this isn’t the fastest drive we’ve ever tested, it is absolutely on the upper end of the Gen5 spectrum. It managed to score Extremely High in Final Fantasy Endwalker, but honestly, any game is going to load incredibly fast.

Thermal performance was exceptional too. Gen5 drives can get pretty hot, but the more efficient controller and NAND that Samsung has employed are excellent at managing heat. Throughout our relentless benchmarking, the drive never exceeded 51c!
