Memory manufacturers are working on future versions of widely used standards such as LPDDR, which is used in low-power devices. According to Business Korea, Samsung and SK hynix have teamed up to push for the standardization of LPDDR6-PIM, which stands for Low Power Double Data Rate 6 Processing-in-Memory.
This new technology offers processing options directly from the memory module. The partnership is still in its early stages, with the initial goal being to register this new memory type with JEDEC.
Currently, the companies are working to determine the requirements for LPDDR6-PIM memory, such as the internal bandwidth that this new standard will utilize. The partnership is notable because, despite Samsung and SK hynix being rivals in the HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) market, SK hynix currently holds a dominant position in this sector.
However, it appears that the collaboration between these two veterans in the memory manufacturing industry could benefit the market by reducing costs and providing high-quality products to customers. Additionally, with standardization, both companies can pool resources to manufacture the same type of memory, unlike previous attempts to implement PIM technology, which has struggled to achieve wide-scale standardization.
