Samsung Announce Galaxy Mega 6.3 and 5.8-Inch Smartphones

We’ve had a whole load of speculation in the past few weeks about a new Samsung phone that was rumoured to be coming. The rumoured naming for this new Samsung phone was either the Galaxy Mega or the Galaxy Note 3. We have been eagerly awaiting confirmation or information from Samsung to let us know which of those it was and now that has finally come as they have announced their new Samsung Galaxy Mega range.

The new Galaxy Mega phones from Samsung come in two sizes, either a 6.3 inch or a 5.8 inch display model. Unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Note series there is no Wacom-based “S Pen” stylus included with the Galaxy Mega. Though the devices do still have most of Samsung’s new mobile software features due to running the latest TouchWiz UI. The Samsung Galaxy Mega features Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the latest version of Google’s Mobile OS.

There are a few hardware differences between the two Megas. Firstly, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 has LTE connectivity and a 1.7GHz dual core CPU while the Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a 1.4GHz dual core and HSPA+21. Secondly, The Galaxy Mega 6.3 has a “HD”, presumably 720p, display while the Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a qHD 960 by 540 display. Finally, The Galaxy Mega 6.3 also has a larger 3200mAh battery compared to the 2600mAh battery on the 5.8 variant. Both devices share the same 1.5GB of RAM, 8MP rear camera and 1.9MP front camera.

This announcement from Samsung comes as they face increasing competition in the large smartphone/phablet market from LG, ZTE and Huawei who have all produced 5+ inch smartphone devices. Samsung’s Galaxy Mega series should debut in Europe and Russia this May. Other regions will have availability details announced soon. Pricing is still undisclosed.

What do you think of the new smartphones from Samsung?
