Sandy Bridge-E to reach 5GHz on air

The Sandy Bridge-E release draws ever closer and now many manufacturers have acquired engineering samples to test with X79 hardware. As a result word of the overclocking capabilities of the LGA 2011 processors have started to spread. An unknown model of an i7 Sandy Bridge-E processor was witnessed to overclock to 4.92GHz on an air cooler (regular heatsink) whilst running with idle temperatures of 45°C. But note no stock coolers are included with Intel LGA 2011 CPUs so this was probably a performance CPU air cooler such as a Noctua NH-D14.

A check on the CPU monitor shows that the CPU is running at a multiplier of 41X with CPU CLK (base clock) set to 120MHz. This gives us a reading of 4.92GHz. The memory was running DDR3-2400 at CAS 10. CPU Vcore was 1.51v. The fact an air cooler can be used to achieve these speeds means that users will not need to upgrade to a water cooled loop and they could even use (if they have one) an existing CPU cooler especially those from the LGA 1366 platform which both Noctua and Thermaltake now provide free compatibility kits for.
