Scooter Firm Pushes For Change In Law To Allow Road Use

Scooter Firm Pushes For Change In UK Law

Electric scooters are still, relatively speaking, a relatively fringe product in the UK. This is largely due to the fact that laws prevent their use in a number of places. Basically, due to health and safety reasons, but also considerations for insurance and injury.

In a report via the BBC though, an American firm is lobbying hard to the UK to change their law. Specifically, to allow the use of scooters on public pavements and roads.

Current UK Law

As above, the current UK law prevents the use of these ‘vehicles’ except in, shall we say, non-public areas. There is, of course, more than a few practical purposes they could serve though. Particularly in City centres were travelling (in a car for example) can be difficult.

As such, a trial is being undertaken in London to see how effective they could be.

How To Try This Out?

The scooters are available at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. They will be available to access via lockers which, in turn, can be opened via the use of an app on your phone. The scooters will be available between 7 am and 9 pm.

The firm hopes that if successful, the scheme may see the current law changed within possibly 12 months.

Personally, while I see a lot of benefits, I also see a lot of problems. I have worked in a large city and certainly see the appeal, but I also worry about misuse and, as above, accidents.

What do you think? Could these be a good idea? – Let us know in the comments!
