It is easy to forget the mechanical drives in a world full of speedy NVMe drives, but they’re still around, and they’re still needed. Seagate has had a lot of firsts when it comes to 2.5-inch drives, and now they’re at it again with a new enterprise drive.
The new Seagate drive features up to 2.4TB capacity and a spindle speed of 10,000 RPM. The name of the drive isn’t the most exciting one, not like IronWolf or SkyHawk, but it describes the drive’s purpose: Seagate Enterprise Performance 10K 2.5-inch hard drive (ST2400MM0129).
Seagate’s new performance drive offers the industries best-in-class performance and the highest capacity available in a 10K 2.5-inch drive. Other capacity options include 1.8TB, 1.2TB and 600GB.
“By deploying Seagate’s Enterprise Performance 10K HDDs in our broad portfolio of server platforms, we can offer the highest Mission Critical capacity, performance and efficiency server solutions that our Enterprise data center customers need to support their growing data storage for Enterprise workloads,” said Michael McNerney, General Manager of Marketing and Solutions at Supermicro. “These new 2.4TB hard drives enable us to build and deliver application-optimized solutions based upon our customer’s requirements.”
The 10K in the drive name gives it away; this is a fast drive. The drive performs with a sustained transfer rate of 270MB/s to 117MB/s. The two numbers are the performance measured from the outer to the inner diameter of the drive. As a comparison, a conventional 5400RPM drive starts out at 105-115MB/s on the outer diameter.
The access latency looks just as nice with an average of 2.9ms.
Seagate applied a lot of their knowledge to this drive; it is more than a better drive motor on a conventional drive. It also features 16GB eMLC NAND for its enhanced caching system. The NAND aids with the I/O acceleration and response time optimisation.
The Seagate Enterprise Performance 10K 2.5-inch hard drive has four disks and eight heads in its classic 2.5-inch 15mm form factor. The size makes it highly compatible with small-footprint servers while offering 3.5-inch drive performance. It’s also an efficient drive with a power consumption of just 8.5W during operations and 4.8W when idle.
The use of an SAS 12Gbps interface is something else that will make the drive plug-in ready for almost any existing system.
An enterprise-class drive also needs enterprise-class features. Among them are Seagate Secure SED and FIPS 140-2 government-grade models provide security for data-at-rest, and Instant Secure Erase (ISE) helps cut IT drive retirement costs.
Other features include the Seagate PowerChoice technology for T10-compliant power management. It enables
IT organisations to tailor systems for enhanced power consumption. There’s also the Seagate RAID Rebuild technology which makes RAID recovery faster and safer in the event of a drive failure.
Last but not least, the FastFormat feature makes it easy to utilise the high performing advanced formats and it is easy to upgrade from 512 emulation to 4K native formats in the future.
Seagate didn’t announce a price at this time, but the drive is currently shipping to select partners with volume shipping planned for Q3 2017.
