Sega Plans to Use AI in Game Development but Will Proceed Carefully
Sega announced that it will use artificial intelligence in video game development, but with care. The statement came during a Q&A session with the company’s investors, where Sega’s leadership said the technology would be applied in specific areas. This cautious approach comes partly because there is strong cultural resistance to AI.
Sega’s Plans for Future Projects
The response came after Sega was asked whether it would follow the industry trend of creating larger projects. Sega explained that it is not against the use of AI (thanks GamesIndustry.biz).
“Rather than fully following the trend toward the large-scale development, we will also pursue efficiency improvements, such as leveraging AI,” Sega said. “However, as AI adoption can face strong resistance in creative areas such as character creation, we will proceed by carefully assess appropriate use cases, such as streamlining development processes.”
Industry Opinions on AI in Gaming
The debate around the use of AI in video games has been going on for a while. Its use is becoming more common, but many still resist it. The CEO of Nexon recently said that “it’s important to assume every company is using AI,” after the release of ARC Raiders, which used AI extensively for audio.
Similarly, Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney stated that it’s safe to assume most future games will be made partly with AI. He also argued that platforms like Steam should not have to label games created using AI.
On the other hand, some companies are more cautious—like Take-Two, which believes it’s impossible to make a game like GTA using only AI. Many agree that these technologies can speed up game production but cannot replace human developers
