Shuhei Yoshida Reportedly Pushed Out of PlayStation Studios by Jim Ryan
After leaving PlayStation, Shuhei Yoshida took part in several podcasts and interviews, but he never fully explained what happened behind the scenes during his time at the company. Now, new details have appeared about this key figure in PlayStation’s history.
Yoshida left Sony in January 2025 after 31 years at the company. Before moving to focus on indie games, he was the President of Worldwide Studios, and he played an important role in major PlayStation exclusives such as God of War (2018), The Last of Us, and Ghost of Tsushima.
Shuhei Yoshida Says He Refused to “Do Ridiculous Things” Before Leaving PlayStation Studios
Even though Yoshida has always been interested in indie games, his move away from leading PlayStation Studios was not his own decision. Reports suggest that he was fired from his role by former CEO Jim Ryan, with his position later given to Hermen Hulst.
According to these reports, Yoshida was asked to follow certain directions but refused. He claimed that Ryan told him to “do some ridiculous things”, and he chose not to follow those requests. Because of this, he was effectively pushed out of his leadership role, although the exact details of those requests remain unclear. They may have been linked to Sony’s push toward live service games, which Ryan strongly supported at the time.
At the moment, there are still many unknown details about what really happened. However, more information could appear in the future, helping to better understand the tension between Yoshida and Ryan during that period.
