Skyrim’s Success Puts The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 in a ‘No-Win’ Situation, Says Ex-Bethesda Artist
Former Bethesda lead artist Nate Purkeypile believes that The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 are currently in a difficult position. According to him, the extremely high expectations from fans — fueled by the massive success of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — have placed tremendous pressure on the studio.
Skyrim, which became one of the most iconic games of all time, set a benchmark that future titles are constantly compared against. Purkeypile even mentioned that this overwhelming pressure was part of the reason he decided to leave Bethesda.
He observed how fans reacted rather lukewarmly to Fallout 4 and how Starfield received mixed to negative feedback, both from players and critics. Based on this, Purkeypile believes that the level of pressure on Bethesda’s upcoming games will be enormous.
Unfair Comparisons and Heavy Expectations
In an interview with Esports Insider, Purkeypile discussed the challenges developers face when working on long-awaited sequels like The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5. When asked whether he thought the teams were in a “no-win” situation due to fan expectations, he answered candidly:
“Yes, and it definitely factored into me leaving,” he said. “Skyrim… being one of the top ten games of all-time, how do you beat that?”
Purkeypile admitted that even if Bethesda managed to create a game on par with Skyrim, many fans would still react negatively. “Even if it’s just as good as Skyrim was, you’ll still get so many people throwing out hateful comments,” he added.
Purkeypile also expressed concern over the toxic side of modern gaming communities. “I’m sure there will be more death threats again. All of that stuff. It’s really unfortunate that that’s the way things have gone,” he said.
