Sony’s decision to move away from physical games remains unchanged, and the company is now making sure buyers know about it before purchasing a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive.
Sony will stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs starting in January 2028, and it has added a warning to PS5 Disc Edition boxes to inform customers.
Sony Updates PS5 Packaging With Warning About Physical Games Ending in 2028
The message printed on the packaging reads:
IMPORTANT NOTICE: From Jan 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan 2028 can continue to be played on this console.
The notice appears in multiple languages and was first shared on the Behind the Games account on X. It can also be seen on the official PlayStation Store product page for the PS5 Disc Edition.
Sony has made it clear that physical game discs will no longer be released for PlayStation after January 2028, meaning consoles with disc drives will only be able to play games released before that date. From then on, new games will only be available through the PlayStation Store or from retailers selling digital download codes, assuming physical game boxes continue to be offered.
The company wants buyers to know that even if they purchase a PS5 with a disc drive, all new PlayStation games released after the deadline will only be available in digital format.
