Sony Announces a New PS5 at a Reduced Price, But Only for Japan

Following Nintendo’s lead — which recently launched a more affordable version of the Nintendo Switch 2 for its domestic market — Sony has announced a new, lower-priced model of the PlayStation 5, available exclusively in Japan.
Just yesterday, there was speculation about what might be revealed during the Japanese PlayStation State of Play. Now, it turns out those rumors were true — Sony has officially announced a budget version of the PS5, available only in Japan and featuring the Japanese language.
A Digital-Only Console at a Lower Price
This new model is essentially a PS5 Digital Edition, nearly identical to the standard digital version but restricted to the Japanese language. It will be sold for 55,000 yen (aprox. $350), marking a notable discount compared to the standard retail price.
The budget PS5 Digital Edition for Japan will launch soon, with a release date set for November 21. This console could significantly boost sales in Japan, where the PS5 has been struggling more than expected.
Sony’s move clearly mirrors Nintendo’s strategy with its cheaper Switch 2 model, signaling the company’s intent to compete directly with Nintendo’s dominance in Japan. Whether the new PS5 includes a regional lock like the affordable Switch 2 or is merely limited by language remains to be seen. More details are expected soon.
