Sony Announces PS5 Has Sold 77.8 Million Units; Sales Decline Compared to Last Year
Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 has sold 77.8 million units worldwide, according to their financial results for the fiscal quarter ending March 31, 2025.
During this period, from January to March, Sony sold 2.8 million PS5 consoles. However, this is a decrease of 1.7 million compared to the same quarter from the previous year. The report does not mention the sales of the new PS5 Pro console, which launched last November.
80% of PS5 Games Sold Are Digital
In the last quarter, combined sales of PS5 and PS4 games reached 76.1 million units, which is an increase of 3.5 million compared to the previous year. Of these, 5.9 million were games developed by Sony, which shows a significant drop compared to the 12.3 million sold in the same period last year.
An interesting point is that 80% of the games sold for PS5 were in digital format, either through full downloads. This represents a 3% increase compared to the previous year.
PlayStation Network Continues to Grow
PlayStation Network reached 124 million active monthly users as of March 31, 2025. This is an increase of 6 million users compared to the same period last year.
Looking ahead, PlayStation is preparing for the release of Death Stranding 2 (June 26), Marathon (September 23), and Ghost of Yotei (October 2). It’s still unknown if there will be a PlayStation Showcase or a State of Play event this summer.
