Sony Didn’t Inform Publishers Before Revealing Physical Game Changes
With Grand Theft Auto 6 set to arrive in stores without a physical disc, many believed that publishers and game developers already knew about Sony’s plan to end support for physical games by 2028. However, according to the latest rumors, that may not have been the case.
According to a report from High Chaos Run, the story may have an unexpected background. The report claims that Sony made the decision on its own, catching many companies in the video game industry by surprise.
Did Sony Announce the End of Physical Games Without Telling Publishers?
Based on information from anonymous sources said to work for major AAA publishers, many publishers and development studios reportedly learned about the news at the same time as players did, when Sony PlayStation published the announcement on its official blog.
If these anonymous claims turn out to be true, the situation would be very serious. The report says the decision even caused problems for some Sony divisions that were completely unaware of what was about to happen. According to the rumor, PlayStation India was in talks with local investors to raise funds and open around 100 physical stores by 2028. After the announcement, those investors reportedly decided to put the project on hold.
There is also growing concern among publishers. Although games are expected to continue reaching store shelves in “code in a box” format, there are fears that this option could also disappear in the future, putting many jobs in the game distribution business at risk.
At the moment, this information should be treated as a rumor, as Sony has not officially commented on these claims.
