Sony is Developing AI to Let Players Talk to PlayStation Characters
A new leak has revealed that Sony is working on a technology designed to animate iconic characters from its game franchises, allowing them to communicate directly with players. A leaked video shows Aloy from the Horizon series talking to a user and responding to questions related to the game, all powered by AI technology. It is still unclear how Sony plans to use this feature in the future.
The Leaked Video
At the time of writing, the video is available here (thanks Insider-Gaming). It shows a user conversing with Aloy, asking her questions about the Horizon story. The AI-generated voice is used, but the character’s lip movements match perfectly. In the final version, it’s expected that the voice of Ashly Burch, the original voice actress for Aloy, will be used. This prototype was created in collaboration with Guerrilla Games.
AI in Game Development
According to a recent survey by the Game Developers Conference 2024, nearly half of the 3,000 developers interviewed admitted to using generative AI tools in their work. Studios like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Naughty Dog, and Shift Up have already confessed to using AI to speed up game production, without going over budget. Now, Sony is revealing its new use of AI, which could be applied to enhance VR experiences or even let players interact more deeply in RPGs by talking directly with NPCs.
