Although the next generation of consoles is getting closer, the component crisis, mainly caused by DRAM and NAND Flash memory, is hitting the technology market so hard that it could have a major impact on the PS6 and Xbox Project Helix. Getting through the crisis could become the main goal for Sony and Microsoft, and this could lead to delays.
In a recent interview (thanks Wccftech), Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said that the price and release date of the PS6 have still not been decided. Both remain open, which means changes could be made if needed to help make the console successful and adapt it to the market situation at the time.
PS6 Release Date Remains Undecided
Sony’s CEO also said that the company needs to evolve and become less dependent on hardware as it moves toward becoming an entertainment business. Digital content will be an important part of Sony’s new strategy, as the company has decided to stop using the physical format starting in January 2028.
Sony’s entire ecosystem will focus more on content and the digital format, although this format has already caused problems in the past. Not long ago, there was controversy after digital movies bought from Sony were removed. Users paid for those movies, but they can no longer watch them and lose access without receiving any compensation.
Sony could decide to delay the launch of the PS6 if the crisis does not improve and if it cannot release the console at a price it considers reasonable. However, even if there is a delay, it could not be very long, because the console would then lose value and appeal.
