Sony sets a high sales target for PlayStation 4, but will it succeed to meet it?

Sony aren’t mucking about when it comes to the PlayStation 4 and to prove this, they have set them selves a very hard target to meet by placing an order for a staggering 16 million PlayStation 4 retail units!

Myself and the rest of the eTeknix team were blown away by the PlayStation 4 presentation a few weeks ago, and while there are more than a few sceptics out there that don’t think its up to scratch, one thing is for certain, in terms of hardware its a hammer blow more powerful than current gen technology and it WILL push gaming forward  from the technology restraints that burden current gen hardware.

Manufacturing 16 million units is no small task and especially when coupled with the fact that Sony intend to launch in “at least one market this November” to which we can assume JAP / US and likely a follow up release around Easter time here in Europe.

Of course its not expect to have all 16 million on launch day, this is most likely for the first order to last “x” amount of months, more will follow based on sales. This isn’t that Sony expects to sell 16 million units either (obviously they hope they will), this is retail units and what Sony will ship to re-sellers for the first period of sales.

While there are bets on the success and failure for Sony and their new console, things are starting to look pretty good for the company who are slowly but surely returning to profit in some sectors, VITA sales have sky rocketed in some areas after a price drop, there are some huge first party titles hitting the market soon for their current offerings and a console launch almost upon us, to which reports are coming in that early pre-orders are looking healthy, even though we don’t have an official price or release date as of yet.

Pegatron and Foxconn Technology have been employed to manufacturer the console for Sony and production is set to begin in August.

So it's no wonder I write about tech and test the latest hardware while I enjoy my hobbies!
