Sony has recently unveiled its latest smartphone, the Xperia ZR. Using similar design traits to the flagship Xperia Z the Xperia ZR will be waterproof and dust resistant. In addition, like its more expensive counter-part the Xperia ZR is also usable underwater in depth up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes.
The Sony Xperia ZR boasts a 4.55 inch screen with a 1280 by 720 resolution. This is enhanced by the BRAVIA Engine 2 and an OptiContrast panel. At the heart of the Xperia ZR is a Snapdragon APQ8064 processor at 1.5GHz across all four cores with a Adreno 320 GPU. There is also 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a micro SD card slot for storage expansion and it runs the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS.
The combination of waterproofing (thanks to IP55 and IP58 certification) and a high quality 13 megapixel camera mean you can get up to some pretty nifty underwater photography and filming if you feel brave enough to take your expensive smartphone for a swim. The Xperia ZR is expected to be available in Q2 2013. Sony made no announcements on pricing, regional availability or carrier details.
What are your thoughts on the Xperia ZR? Does it look like a decent cheaper alternative to the Xperia Z?
