Square Enix Wants to Turn Final Fantasy 7 Into “an IP With an Ever-Evolving Future”
Next year, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will close the remake trilogy, but Square Enix does not seem to intend to put Cloud and his companions aside. Instead, it aims to make FF7 an IP with a constantly evolving future.
During the “From Reunion to Resolve” panel at PAX West, game director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that the Remake project was not created only as a modern reinterpretation of the 1997 classic, but as a way to bring Final Fantasy 7 to a new generation of players.
Square Enix Wants Final Fantasy 7 to Keep Evolving
The panel also showed a slide that clearly talks about expanding the future of FF7 and turning it into “an IP with an ever-evolving future,” going beyond its role as simply a classic from the past. This approach recalls what already happened after the 1997 game, when Square Enix released spin-offs, side projects and even an animated film, with the clear aim of expanding the reach of the brand.
At the moment, apart from Final Fantasy 7 Revelation and the two already announced DLCs starring Sephiroth and Vincent, there are no official confirmations of new projects.
However, Hamaguchi’s words and the direction presented during the panel indicate that Square Enix sees the story of Cloud and his companions as a pillar that is meant to continue growing, with new games and side projects that could arrive in the coming years.
