Star Citizen Crowdfunding Passes $800 Million… Still Not “Done”

Recently, Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games announced that the annual CitizenCon event won’t be in-person this year; although, it’s not like they couldn’t afford a massive event, as the game has reached another massive crowdfunding milestone. It has now reached a staggering $800 million. Of course, this makes it by far the largest crowdfunded game ever, although it has surpassed that milestone many times over the last, uh, decade or so. Of course, if this trend continues, it may become one of the most expensive games ever made, although I suspect that title may go to GTA VI at the time of writing. However, unlike GTA VI, Star Citizen would have to finish development to rank its development value once and for all.

CitizenCon Direct 2024

For some reason or another, it seems that Cloud Imperium Games has decided to host their extremely popular CitizenCon Direct online this year. Quite strange that it will be hosted online this year, considering last year’s success with it managing to attract around 5000 people and giving plenty of reveals, attracting even more investment, making 2024 Star Citizens’ second best year for crowdfunding.

Last year’s CitizenCon Direct had many reveals, including the release window for Star Citizen 1.0’s single-player campaign, Squadron 42, and its impressive cast of famous actors, including Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill, Gary Oldman, Liam Cunningham, Gillian Anderson, and many more.

CitizenCon Direct 2025

As mentioned before, this year’s CitizenCon Direct will be online streamed via YouTube and Twitch and promises “plenty of reveals, exciting surprises, and a fun way for many of you to take part in the festivities alongside CIG developers, no matter where you are in the world.”

The explanation they gave for it being hosted online this year was due to the fact that they wanted to focus more of their efforts on improving the overall playability of Star Citizen and focus on next year’s release of Squadron 42.
