Steam Deck 2 Is Still in Development Despite Rising RAM and Storage Prices
Despite the serious shortage and rising prices of RAM and storage memory, Valve is still moving forward with its plans for the Steam Deck 2.
In an interview with IGN (thanks VideoCardz), Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais confirmed that the current situation in the PC parts market has not changed the company’s plans to launch a successor to the Steam Deck.
Valve’s position remains clear. The company is not interested in releasing a small upgrade or a new version every year. The goal for the Steam Deck 2 is still to provide a clear increase in performance while keeping a good balance between power use and battery life. Griffais explained that Valve continues to watch the market to decide when and how it can launch a device that meets these performance goals at a competitive price.
Valve Won’t Let High Memory Prices Derail Steam Deck 2
This is important because the current parts crisis has already affected Valve’s existing products. Just a few months ago, Valve had to increase the prices of the Steam Deck OLED. The 512 GB model went from $549 to $789, while the 1 TB version went from $649 to $949. These increases were directly linked to higher memory prices.
Valve’s plans for the Steam Deck 2 have not changed. However, the current costs suggest that its launch may depend on when production becomes cheap enough for Valve to sell it without making the final price too high for users.
For now, Valve has not announced an official release date or confirmed specifications for the Steam Deck 2. As more information becomes available, we’ll make sure to let you guys know here at eTeknix.
