Steam Machine Appears on European Retail Listings Starting at $950

Valve’s return to desktop hardware is creating excitement — and concern — mainly due to its pricing. Recently, the long-awaited Steam Machine has started to appear in listings from early European retailers, most notably the Czech store Smarty.cz. However, the listed prices have raised eyebrows, with figures exceeding the $1,000 mark.

According to information found in the retailer’s source code (thanks Reddit), the 512 GB model is priced around $950, while the 2 TB version reaches $1,070. At first glance, these prices are surprising, especially considering that analysts had initially estimated around $700 based on component costs.

A Likely Placeholder Price Before Official Launch

It appears these may be placeholder prices, a common practice among retailers before a product’s official release. They often list inflated prices to prevent losses from market fluctuations or to prepare their systems ahead of official announcements.

Unlike Sony or Microsoft, Valve has suggested that the Steam Machine will not be sold at a loss. This means the price should closely reflect the real cost of building a high-performance compact PC. Given the current surge in DRAM and storage prices, a final retail price between $800 and $900 is not entirely unrealistic, though the current $1,000 figure seems more like a precautionary measure.

Set to launch in early 2026, the Steam Machine promises to be six times more powerful than the Steam Deck. While that’s an exciting prospect for gamers, the question remains whether Valve can strike the right balance between performance and affordability.
