Steam Machine is More Powerful Than 70% of PCs Used by Valve’s Users

Valve Unveils Steam Machine

If you’re interested in the power of the Steam Machine, know that according to Valve Corporation it is as powerful as or more powerful than 70 % of the PCs used by Steam players.

Design and Goals

The Steam Machine is the major topic right now in the PC hardware world. There are still many questions about this device—depending on factors like price and technical specifications it could be very interesting or completely ignorable. According to a Valve engineer, the Steam Machine is planned to be as powerful as or more powerful than 70 % of gaming PCs currently on the market.

Yazan Aldehayyat from Valve said: “Well, we can look at it from two different directions, right? The first is we it needs to have enough performance to play all your Steam games. Like that was very important to us. We want it to be a pretty simple experience. You don’t have to worry about, oh, I play these games. I don’t know if it has enough performance to play these games. That was the first hurdle: we had to make sure the Steam Machine had enough power so you wouldn’t worry.”

He added: “We also kind of wanted to target more of an entry-level device. We understand that affordability is really important, right? The price point definitely plays a huge factor into what performance level we’re trying to target. Essentially, we kind of used those two directions to triangulate what we think makes the most sense.”

Performance and Expectations

“Another thing that we actually looked at is just the Steam hardware survey. Basically, that just gives us a good benchmark of where people’s home devices are at in terms of performance, and the Steam Machine is equal or better than 70% of what people have at home.”

That said, the first impression is that it is a gaming machine somewhere between an Xbox Series S and a PlayStation 5 in terms of performance. However, we will need to see it in action to get a more precise idea.

In other news, an estimate by the analytics company Alinea Analytics suggests that Steam has already generated more than US $16.2 billion in revenue from January through mid-November 2025.
