Steam Sets Record With Over 15M Simultaneous Users Online

Steam just reached a new milestone in their 14-years of service, reaching over 15 million concurrent users online for the first time. At the same time, the current most popular title PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds reached 1.3 million concurrent users as well. It slightly edges record holder DOTA2 with its record 1.295 million online users. The information comes from SteamDB who has been diligently tracking the player count on the platform since 2015. To keep things in perspective, the maximum number of users set in 2012 was only 6 million users. The 14 million concurrent user record was broken in the beginning of January 2017. This clearly shows the rapid growth of PC gaming over the last few years alone.
Steam and PC Gaming Growth
Various factors contribute to this high rate of growth. Among them include the popularity of e-Sports worldwide. Steam itself is seeing a 1.5M growth every month for the past two years. The wide availability and affordability of gaming PC hardware also contributes to this.
In addition to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and DOTA2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive continues to be a dominant online game. Rockstar’s GTAV is also not far behind, as well as H1Z1:King of the Kill and Team Fortress 2.
