Steam Users Play Only a Few Games Each Year, Mostly Older Titles, Valve Data Reveals
With the release of Steam Replay 2025, we can now see not only our own yearly gaming stats but also some insights about the community as a whole. In particular, it shows that Steam users, on average, play only a few games per year — and not very recent ones.
These are median values taken from a large and varied sample of users. So, they shouldn’t be seen as representative of hardcore players, but they are still interesting to look at, especially to understand the gap between dedicated and casual players.
Average Steam Players Try Very Few Games
One striking detail is the small number of games that the average Steam user plays each year, as well as the low share of games released in 2025 that were actually played. This suggests that many players have a rather relaxed attitude toward gaming.
The Steam Replay 2025 report shows that the average player tried only four games in total during the year. That’s a small number, especially since these aren’t necessarily completed games — just ones that were played for some amount of time.
Another interesting fact is how few of those games were new. Only 14% of the games played by Steam users in 2025 were actually released that same year.
This means many Steam users play older titles instead of new releases. It also hints that a large portion of the Steam community either plays infrequently or sticks to a few familiar favorites rather than buying and trying new games.
