Steelseries Mobile Gaming & Headphone Review

This hasn’t exactly been our usual sort of review, least not the kind of review format I’m used to writing but either way its been a bit of fun. Steel Series were kind enough to give out free bags of swag at CES and it only seemed fair to share some of my experiences with the products with our fans, especially since I’ve had a lot of fun using these products and intend to use them for the foreseeable future.

Steel Series already have a super strong brand name when it comes to peripherals and its something that shows signs of only growing stronger throughout 2013. While I do prefer console and PC gaming in general, as well as their related peripherals such as mechanical keyboards, custom controllers, gaming mice and more, I can’t ignore the ever growing world of mobile gaming and clearly, neither can Steel Series. Mobile gaming is getting bigger and bigger each month, let alone each year and while I expect its popularity will taper off at some point in the near future its obviously a massive part of the market for developers and peripheral manufacturers, especially as we enter a period where mobile GPU/CPU makes high end mobile gaming more common place each day.

The Steel Series Free Wireless Controller isn’t the first product I’ve seen to address the mobile gaming issue with touch screens, there are other controllers on the market. It’s also safe to say that many of the solutions on the market are decidedly cheaper to purchase but near all of them I’ve seen or tried feel cheaper and simply perform cheaper. Steel Series have a brand name to protect and their controller is expensive, but it does feel like a quality product and that’s always something worth paying for.

I wasn’t taken by the stick on controls of the Free touch-screen Gaming Controls, yet for their price its hard to be judgemental as they do work rather well and provide a more cost effective, compact and portable solution for people who game on larger touch-screen devices.

The real winner here though is their headphones and while not exclusively a gaming product, since headphones can be used for a range of audio related tasks, Steel Series made them with gaming in mind. It really shows too as with the other mobile products we’ve looked at today they are perfect for taking with you and gaming on the go.

As a child still in my 30's (but not for long), I spend my day combining my love of music and movies with a life-long passion for gaming, from arcade classics and retro consoles to the latest high-end PC and console games. So it's no wonder I write about tech and test the latest hardware while I enjoy my hobbies!
