Subnautica 2 Sells 5 Million Copies as Krafton Plans to Turn It Into a Franchise
In its latest financial report, Krafton celebrated the success of Subnautica 2, confirming that the company plans to turn the game into a long-term franchise. The milestone comes after the title sold 5 million copies in just 22 days following its launch on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
Krafton said its main goal is to focus on quality and maintaining the community’s trust until the game reaches its full release, while also preparing a long-term expansion of the franchise. In the short term, the company plans to support the development team by adding more features, including expanded co-op scalability, while keeping the core experience of the game intact.

The game’s commercial success has come despite recent issues between developer Unknown Worlds and publisher Krafton. Earlier this month, CEO Ted Gill announced he would step down from his role as part of an agreement with Krafton, which will ensure the publisher pays the bonuses promised to the development team.
“Krafton, Inc., Unknown Worlds Entertainment, and Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire have reached a mutual settlement and agreed to dismiss all pending legal proceedings,” Krafton said in a statement.
“Unknown Worlds and Krafton are focused on supporting Subnautica 2, its Early Access journey to the full 1.0 release and the global community that has made the franchise so special. Unknown Worlds will continue leading development, with Krafton providing support for the success of the game.”
