Unfortunately, we don’t have pricing information just yet as this isn’t a retail ready product. Although given that it’s a small sensor that can be built into virtually anything, we can’t see it adding much to the overall price, if any increase in price at all, to any products that come to market featuring this hardware.

Overview

It’s great to see innovations like this moving over to the desktop market. It’s not the first time I’ve seen a desktop fingerprint sensor, but it is the first time I’ve seen or used on that was designed for day-to-day consumers rather than professional use. Remembering passwords has never been a big issue for me, but entering them time and time again can be laborious, especially given the number of accounts and sites I use on a daily basis, so having this quick and easy way logging in still provides a huge time-saving benefit for me. Of course, this isn’t just for lazy people or for people who are rubbish at remembering their passwords, as the added security is the key element here.

My work emails, my eTeknix site login details, my bank details and so much more are obviously very important to me, I have strong passwords to keep these accounts safe, as I’m sure you do with your accounts. Knowing that someone couldn’t sit down at my computer and even log into Windows, let alone my browser, social media or bank accounts without the use of my thumbprint is a great level of protection that simply cannot be ignored.

I’ve seen this technology used in offices, stopping staff members from accessing other people’s workstations, but it’s just as vital a component in the home environment. It may only be a prototype, but I’m already completely sold on the idea of having a fingerprint sensor on my desktop system. I already have one on my laptop, I already have one on my phone and on my tablet, so it’s certainly the next logical step to creating a more secure ecosystem and I, and the rest of us here at eTeknix, can’t wait to see Synaptics and their partner brands develop this technology further.
