Take-Two Confirms GTA 6 Was Developed Without Generative AI
Grand Theft Auto 6 is still confirmed to launch in November, and Take-Two has reiterated that the release window remains unchanged, with marketing plans already in motion for Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated open-world title.
Alongside this confirmation, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, addressed one of the most discussed topics in the industry today: generative AI. According to Zelnick, GTA 6 has been developed without using AI-generated content.
GTA 6 Was Built Without Generative AI
Zelnick explained that generative AI tools were not used to create the game’s world and will not be used in that way in the future either:
Specifically with regards to GTA 6, Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building. Their worlds are handcrafted. That’s what differentiates them. They’re built from the ground up, building by building, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood. They’re not procedurally generated, they shouldn’t be.
This statement highlights Rockstar’s traditional development approach, which focuses on handcrafted environments rather than automated or AI-driven world creation.
While GTA 6 itself does not rely on generative AI, Take-Two is not rejecting the technology entirely. Zelnick confirmed that the company is already using AI in many internal processes:
We’re now actively embracing generative AI, we have hundreds of pilots and implementations across our company, including with our studios
According to the Take-Two CEO, AI is mainly being used to improve efficiency, lower costs, and simplify certain tasks, allowing creative teams to focus on more meaningful parts of game development.
Zelnick also commented on the huge expectations surrounding GTA 6, stating that Take-Two does not take that attention for granted and plans to deliver a creative and surprising marketing campaign. He also confirmed that GTA 6 will receive a physical edition, putting an end to recent rumors.
The game is set to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
In other news, Russian officials and religious figures called for a ban on GTA 6 ahead of its release.
