TekRepublic TH Pro Headset Review

Given that this headset is branded a gaming headset I decided to put it through its paces with some online gaming, choosing Max Payne 3 and Battlefield 3 to get me started, but before I speak about the quality of the sound I want to point out my biggest negative point first on the headset so that we can move forward from there.

The speakers in the headphones are way too loud, not even in the sense that you should just turn it down because its too loud, when maxed out to 100% they double as a nice set of desktop speakers, I don’t think TekRepublic have to much built this from the ground up as they have put some actual desktop speakers into some casing, I generally found that operating them at 1-3% volume (using the windows volume slider) to be optimum, but each incremental step added too much volume, later opting for dropping my game or media player master volume down to 10% then using the windows volume to adjust from there to get a reasonable level.

Once the innitial accident of nearly damaging my ears had passed and I had the volume under control things definitely started to improve, bass response is superb and in fact the overall sound quality is brilliant in both gaming, movies, music and anything else you want to chuck at it.

The microphone quality is fairly decent too, while its not exactly ground breaking, its on par with everything else within this price range and it gives clear and crackle free performance both in gaming and on Skype.

While this headset does feature a virtual 7.1 mode through its software, its more a gimmick feature than anything else, I’m not going to mark the headset down for this though as I have yet to find a virtual surround sound system for headsets that actually works, at least out side of a dedicated AV receiver with a £200+ DSP processor, but when it comes to software, it just doesn’t work.

As a child still in my 30's (but not for long), I spend my day combining my love of music and movies with a life-long passion for gaming, from arcade classics and retro consoles to the latest high-end PC and console games. So it's no wonder I write about tech and test the latest hardware while I enjoy my hobbies!
