Tenda W150M Portable Wireless Access Point Review

Usage and Testing

Test system:

  • Asus Maximus V Forumla
  • Intel Core i7 3770k
  • Corsair Vengeance 1866MHz 16GB
  • XFX Radeon HD 7970
  • Corsair H100i
  • Corsair HX1050W
  • Kingston HyperX 240GB SSD
  • Asus VS247
  • Dell XPS 15 Laptop with Intel Wireless-N 1030
  • Tenda W150M

We would like to thank AOCAsus, CorsairKingston and Lian Li for supplying us with our test system components. Many different software applications are also used to gain the broadest spectrum of results, which allows for the fairest testing possible.

Software used:

  • LAN Speed Test
To test this unit I’ll be performing my usual LAN speed tests to see how the unit performs in its AP mode for its throughput speed from LAN to WLAN and then in its router mode to test its WLAN to WLAN throughput. Further more as this is a portable unit, I will be testing it out in the field as it is intended for to see how it gets on with day-to-day use.

Looking over the results, the W150M may not be as fast as most desktop routers in its AP mode, but this is purely down to the 10/100 LAN/WAN connection that the router has. When in router mode and when testing a WLAN to WLAN connection, the 150Mbps wireless-N connection gives a slightly better throughput which for a portable device of this size is rather impressive.

On the front of range, this is where the W150M comes into a whole new light. With many routers, I’ve found the wireless signal to die off rather promptly and even at a ‘reasonable’ range a signal can be hard to reach. Tenda’s little unit though could not be much more different. When testing this unit out in the field in Germany, I stayed in a small apartment on the 4th floor and to my astonishment I was still able to connect to the access point from ground level outside with ease. Most other routers that I’ve had struggle to give me a signal at the bottom of my garden, let alone from four floors.
