The Next Halo Game Will Heavily Use Generative Artificial Intelligence

A new report claims that generative artificial intelligence (AI) will play a major role in developing the next chapter of the Halo series and all future Halo Studios projects. AI will influence everything — from world design to enemy behavior and even internal workflows. Will this lead to better or worse games? Time will tell.

AI: An Unstoppable Force

Halo

Halo Studios isn’t the first developer to adopt generative AI. For example, Bungie has created its own ChatGPT-style tool called BunGPT to help developers write and search for code faster.

Similarly, PlayStation’s new studio, Dark Outlaw Games, led by Call of Duty veteran Jason Blundell, recently posted a job listing asking for experience with generative art tools like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and ChatGPT. The goal is to “refine and polish 2D artwork created by both human artists and generative AI tools.” It’s clear that this future is not coming — it’s already here.

The source of the report, RebsGaming, is known for reliability and has accurately leaked Halo news in the past. According to their information, the Halo Studios teams may go further than most by making AI a core part of the creation process for future Halo titles. The source said that generative AI will be “woven into every aspect” of upcoming Halo development.

Here’s the full statement:

“Generative AI is apparently woven into every aspect of development, such as enemy AI and terrain generation. I think what they’re mostly doing is that, and then touching up the work with human hands. Also, developers are expected to meet similar or quicker deadlines, and the only means to do so is through the use of AI. Whether that’s mundane tasks like scheduling things or writing emails, all the way up to actual game development.”

RebsGaming added that these claims align with Microsoft’s recent AI initiatives. Brad Smith, the company’s Vice Chair and President, has said: “In FY 2025, Microsoft is on track to invest approximately $80 billion to build out AI-enabled datacenters to train AI models and deploy AI and cloud-based applications around the world.”

In other news, Halo fans may get major franchise news during the Halo World Championships on October 24, with developers teasing updates on an ongoing project — possibly linked to Halo Infinite or future series plans.
