The next Xbox could bring Blu-ray, Kinect 2 but no support for used games

Rumour have been going far and wide recently over the next generation consoles, especially around the next Xbox from Kotaku and its sources.

The first rumour talks about the next Xbox sporting a Blu-ray support,  thus expanding the capacity limits from 9GB of the DVDs to between 25 and 50GB. This would come in handy for the games requiring a lot of data to work fully and at its best.

The second rumour is the fact that the next Xbox will ship along the new next-gen Kinect sporting an on-board processor, a design originally planned for the first Kinect which didn’t make it to the final product.

The last and most intriguing one is the incorporation of some sort of anti-used game system, which at the moment is rather unclear what its full extent would be. Would it stop you from copying a friend’s game that has already been used? One thing is sure, if this is what is coming in the next Xbox, renting, second-hand sales and even borrowing games will become a thing of the past for gamers on Microsoft’s consoles.

Kotaku was told the following by a Microsoft rep:

“As an innovator we’re always thinking about what is next and how we can push the boundaries of technology like we did with Kinect. We believe the key to extending the lifespan of a console is not just about the console hardware, but about the games and entertainment experiences being delivered to consumers. Beyond that we don’t comment on rumors or speculation.”
