The Witcher 4 Will Take Inspiration from Baldur’s Gate 3 Because It Wants to Innovate
The Witcher 4 aims to innovate, and that’s why it will take inspiration from Baldur’s Gate 3. This was revealed by CD Projekt RED’s co-CEO, Michal Nowakowski, who spoke about the creative references guiding the development of the new entry in the series.
“There was a lot of inspiration in what Baldur’s Gate 3 did,” Nowakowski said. “I think we’re still sticking to what was in Witcher 3, Cyberpunk. But we don’t want to just make another game like that, just with better graphics. We do want to innovate.”
The masterpiece by Larian Studios managed to redefine the concept of player freedom, choice depth, and world interaction. These are exactly the aspects the Polish studio wants to bring into The Witcher 4.
Learning from the Best
“That’s the kind of game [Larian] can make. But a lot of stuff with how they can interact with the world and what it does was, for sure, some inspiration to us,” Nowakowski continued (thanks Push Square), clarifying that the next Witcher game will not feature dice mechanics like Baldur’s Gate 3.
Having sold over fifteen million copies, Baldur’s Gate 3 has been praised by the international press with exceptionally high scores, and players have absolutely loved it. That’s why CD Projekt RED sees it as a powerful example to learn from.
It will be fascinating to see how the developers of The Witcher 4 manage to integrate some of the features that made Larian Studios’ game so beloved, while still remaining faithful to the proven structure and formula of their own franchise.
