The Witcher Remake Pauses Development to Focus on The Witcher 4
If you were waiting to play as Geralt of Rivia again in his early days, you will have to be patient. CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the long-awaited remake of The Witcher is temporarily paused. Be clear, it has not been cancelled at all, but the Polish company has decided to freeze its production to focus all its efforts on The Witcher 4.
Development of the remake is in the hands of Fool’s Theory, but the idea from the beginning has been for the project to directly use the technology, graphical assets, tools, and workflows being created for the fourth game in the series. Trying to develop both games at the same time risked doubling the work and spending resources trying to solve the same technical problems in different ways.
CD Projekt Puts The Witcher Remake on Hold to Focus on The Witcher 4
For this reason, the studio’s strategy is to temporarily pause the project and integrate it into The Witcher 4’s workflow. Once the latter reaches a sufficient level of development and its foundations on Unreal Engine 5 are fully in place, the team will be able to return to this remake, which is also highly anticipated by players.
In a statement to GameSpot, CD Projekt Red said,
Fool’s Theory team is focused mainly on the development of Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, while a relatively small part of their team is supporting the development of The Witcher 4. As we have previously announced, the development on The Witcher Remake has been temporarily integrated with The Witcher 4 due to production process dependencies. As The Witcher Remake will be built on the foundation laid by The Witcher 4, we need to have the necessary assets, tools, and pipelines ready for efficient development.
Meanwhile, the roadmap for the franchise continues. The main Fool’s Theory team is currently focused on the Songs of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3, planned for 2027, while a smaller group directly supports the development of The Witcher 4. With the fourth game set for 2028, everything suggests that the remake will be released sometime after The Witcher 4.
CD Projekt Red prefers to prioritize the development of The Witcher 4 before getting into the development of a remake, which makes a lot of sense. We will keep you informed.
