Thecus Releases New Features for ThecusOS 7.0

Thecus have updated their NAS operating systems to ThecusOS 7.0 with two new features that will help you get the most out of your Thecus NAS’ as well as stay updated on their status and in control of the functions. This latest version of the powerful operating system introduces the support for Scale-out architecture and also includes the general release of Thecus Connect. These new additions bring new levels of mobility and scalability to Thecus’ extensive NAS product range.

The general release of Thecus Connect provides a powerful tool to access and monitor up-to-date information of a NAS, while Scale-out brings the ability to intelligently and dynamically expand the capacity of Thecus storage ,” said Florence Shih. General Manager of Thecus Technology Corp.

Previously, Thecus NAS users needed to upgrade the entire NAS when they ran out of space and couldn’t upgrade with more or bigger drives, but that should be history now thanks to the new Scale-Out feature that allows users to dynamically increase their storage capacity. This new feature, allows for new units to be added as required and essentially without limitations. It’s currently unclear how exactly it works, but I’ll have a closer look at the feature when the next Thecus NAS arrives at my door step in a few days, so stay tuned for our next review. In all likelihood, it’s a form of virtual JBOD function that allows you to expand the storage pool with storage from other Thecus NAS and essentially provide you with one large data pool that spans multiple devices.

The second new feature in ThecusOS 7.0 is the full rollout and official release of Thecus Connect which gives users the ability to portably control and check their NAS directly from an Android or iOS mobile phone. The Thecus Connect app provides up-to-date information on all Thecus NAS’ connected to your network and it alerts you immediately should trouble emerge. This is a great add-on to have for anyone as it saves you the manual checking on health status or email notifications that in theory could be delayed due to the email servers it has to pass to get to you. Never miss a notification again with this, at least for Android and iOS. There currently are no plans for a Windows 10 mobile version.
