Thermaltake Smart RGB 600W Power Supply Review

A Closer Look

Out of the box, the Thermaltake Smart RGB has a nice strong design. Admittedly, on the surface there isn’t much going on aesthetically and, in truth, there isn’t. It does, however, look very solid and don’t forget, the ‘light show’ only begins when it’s turned on.

While the aesthetics are rather plain, there are aspects that make it look a bit special. For example, the Thermaltake logo to the centre of the fan looks fantastic and, in addition, the branding to the sides is nice, clear, bright and bold!

The fan design is 120mm and has been designed with specifically quiet operation in mind. When the 12 LED lights come into play, however, they can pull some very nice effects on the blades.

It’s another great little small touch as well, but it’s great to see Thermaltake put out all the key operating specifications of the power supply on it. This includes the specific rails and the wattages outputted on them. It’s technical stuff, but if you’re into it, it can be important stuff to know.

The rear panel of the power supply has some nice large vents which should (in theory) help the air move quickly and efficiently through it. In addition, the RGB lighting switch provides the control for the lighting. This has around 6 settings ranging from specific colours to ranges.

Cabling

As this is a non-modular power supply, knowing your cabling is very important. Fortunately, this has pretty much every cable a standard gaming PC would require. In addition, it’s a nice touch that rather than having straight up molex/sata strips, they are provided in combinations.

The cables are rather terse, meaning moving them around isn’t easy. In addition, they are also not particularly long. Unless you have some ridiculously huge chassis, however, the lengths should be more than fine. You may, however, have to make compromises on your management.

Internals

Getting inside the power supply is pretty straight forward. You should, however, note that by doing this you do void the warranty. Once inside though, the initial design layout is surprisingly good. Particularly for a non-modular power supply.

The layout is clean, tidy and well thought out.

Starting with the fan, this is a TT-1225 design which we have seen before from Thermaltake. This fan is of their own design and while nothing particularly notable (except for the RGB lighting) has always proven to be a solid performer.

A closer look at the internals highlights just what a clean design this is. You’ll find no untidy blobs of glue. Nor will you find any hideous clumps of cables which could affect the air flow.

In fact, in regards to temperature control, the 2 heat sink banks are exceptionally well placed in relationship to the fan.

While the Thermaltake Smart RGB doesn’t have all Japanese capacitors, a closer inspection finds that the main capacitor is ‘Cheng X’ branded. While this is a Chinese company, you might think that alarm bells would ring. Well, yes, China doesn’t have the best reputation for electronics. At least, not on the same level as Japan.

With it being rated to 105c, however, this is a cut above the usual ‘trash’ capacitors found in (bad) power supplies. As such, despite it not being Japanese, I wouldn’t worry too much.
