Thermaltake TOUGHFAN 12 RGB Fan Kit Review

Exterior Packaging

While the Thermaltake TOUGHFAN 12 RGB doesn’t have much space to work with (not that many fan kits do), the initial impression is excellent with a nice clear image of the fan, with its RGB lighting in action, front and centre. – The front of the boxwork, overall, is excellent with it telling you all of the key product features at a nice easy-on-the-eye glance.

Exterior Packaging – Rear

The rear and sides have also been well used with a lot of technical specifications and more detailed features listed. – This also includes a solid bank of images to the rear showing the Thermaltake TOUGHFAN 12 RGB with various lighting modes enabled.

On the whole, while the packaging may be small, the presentation is spot on!

The Fans

As this is a triple-pack fan, we don’t really need to show you images of all three because each one is identical to the other. Just for the sake of clarity though, this is a triple pack and, as such, you do get three fans inside!

Yes, I know, perhaps a little patronisingly obvious, but I thought it worth mentioning just to remove all trace of doubt!

The fans themselves definitely have that TOUGHFAN ethos with a sleek professional look and that distinctive design to the centre of the fan blades. – Typically, TOUGHFAN generally represents something of a performance brand for Thermaltake and this is definitely evidence regardless of whether the RGB is on or off!

As noted earlier in the review, all four sides of the Thermaltake TOUGHFAN 12 RGB have patterned open section which allow the RGB lighting to pop through. While it might seem like a small touch or relatively incidental thing to do, this will clearly offer an extra added level of aesthetics should the consumer choose to fit these, for example, to a cooling radiator.

A closer look at the fan’s specifications reveals this to be a TT-1225 model. This is, put simply, the current generation of ‘TOUGHFAN’ design. – What do we mean by this? Well, in a nutshell, you’re still getting the excellent performance offered through one of the more standard (professional looking) variants, but this has the added bonus of some extensive RGB lighting effects.

Accessories

The Thermaltake TOUGHFAN 12 RGB has everything you need right out of the box to ensure you can successfully install this onto your system. – This includes a hub controller, various screws (depending on how you plan to fit them), and the cables not just to supply power, but also to successfully get this connected to Thermaltake’s TT RGB Plus software (for customisation).

We’ve seen the hub controller (included with the Thermaltake TOUGHFAN 12 RGB) utilised in many other of their RGB fan products. And this is certainly good news as while it’s relatively limited in terms of functionality, it does exactly what 99% of users will want.

It comes provided with 5 hook-ups which are sadly somewhat proprietary to Thermaltake fans, but given that this is a triple fan kit, you clearly have more than enough here. In this regard though, you do have the option to daisy chain multiple hub controllers which is clearly useful as this can allow just a single connection to your motherboard.

Finally, the hub controller comes with some manual control switches, but this is more in terms of specifically setting fan operation configurations. Short version, you can’t manually set the lighting so this will need to be connected to your motherboard to change/customise the RGB.
