Over Power Protection and Max Wattage
All modern power supplies (should) have overpower protections in place. This is to ensure that if a system is putting a wattage beyond the rated level, the power supply will ‘cut out’ before any risk of damage occurs.
In this regard, we can happily report that the Thermaltake Toughpower GF1’s protections did come into place during testing and, as such, they are both working and correct. It does, however, get a little more interesting than that.
During our max wattage test, this power supply was able to achieve 1111 watts before the protections stepped in. This is nearly 300 watts over the rated amount and is honestly a very excellent result. You should, of course, never buy a power supply that doesn’t have the rated wattage to handle your system, if you do, however, push beyond 850 watts in this case, Thermaltake has a solid bit of wiggle room for you to manoeuvre in.
